Shire recognized for commitment to DEB therapy

Shire was recently honored with one of three Partners in Progress awards at the DebRA of America benefit sponsorship event, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The October 24th event was part of EB Awareness Week.

Accepting the award from Shire was Lawrence Charnas, MD, PhD, Director and Head of Discovery Medicine, and medical lead for Shire's DEB work during preclinical activities and Lin Guey, PhD., Assoc. Director, Discovery Biology and Translational Research, and pre-clinical lead for Shire's DEB project.

Brett Kopelan, Executive Director of DebRA of America said about Shire and the Partners in Progress awards: "DebRA of America initiated the Partners in Progress award this year given the amazing strides in not only the awareness of the disease but also in the research and development of a potential treatment. Shire is a perfect example of a partner given their reputation for getting to know their patient population intimately. I’ve been impressed with the degree of involvement from a variety of departments and the clear commitment to making a difference in the lives of those with EB."

"It was a tremendous honor to represent Shire as we accepted this recognition" said Dr. Charnas. "We spoke of the bravery that families and patients with DEB face every day. The entire Shire team is working to bring the program forward to meet the unmet needs of these patients — who are at the heart of everything that we do."

Earlier this year, Shire acquired Lotus Tissue Repair and their investigational recombinant collagen VII protein replacement therapy which is in development as a potential treatment for DEB. Mr. Kopelan also added, "DebRA is proud to be working with Shire and we look forward to a deepening relationship in the years ahead and to hopefully easing the inherent burden of living with EB."
