SUMMARY OF RESEARCH BEING UNDERTAKEN

The advances in the treatment of symptoms of EB have led to improved quality of life for many people with EB. Unfortunately, many people with recessive dystrophic EB are at risk from skin cancer although the reasons for this increased incidence are unknown. Development of new ways to treat this complication of the disease is needed.

To understand how the cancer develops and to test novel treatments targeted against this specific tumour, the scientific community needs a model system. This research plans to develop a mouse model of this specific aspect of EB, using a technique where the resulting gene is genetically "cut out" in a specific area of the skin, and to characterise the specific biological characteristics of the cancers arising in this site of skin blistering.
