Disease Introduction

The purpose of the chapter called Disease is to give information on the disease Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), the different forms that exist and the problems that are caused by the disease. The severity of the disease and the resulting effects on the patient are largely individually-determined and therefore do not qualify for a general description. The information provided should thus be seen as background information on which the treatment and nursing and general care of the individual patient can be based. It can also simply be used to inform the patient and to draw up an individual care plan.

This chapter describes the disease and the possible effects it can have on the patient and the carers involved. It has the following structure:

• the disease EB and the different types;

• the symptoms that occur in EB (type related)

• diagnosis

On the basis of the information in this chapter and the chapter entitled Treatment a number of important problems have been elaborated on in a standard care plan (see chapter Standard Care Plan).
