Expertise Exercises Fingers
Intervention for the prevention of fusions An exercise for the fingers is: put the hand on a flat surface (for example a tabletop), stretch the fingers completely and spread the fingers as much as possible.
Bandaging When bandages are applied ensure that the fingers do not make skin-to-skin contact with each other. This applies specifically for the implant of the fingers; fusion usually starts at the `membranes' between the fingers. An example of bandaging is the use of a gauze dressing (for example MepitelŪ) cut into strips and applied between the fingers in such a way that the strip starts on the hand palm and ends at the back of the hand. Dressing each finger separately with a gauze dressing with vaseline has a preventative effect as well. Use of splint The use of splints (especially at night) may help to bring and keep the fingers in a good position. A splint must be applied properly. For this the position of the hand and fingers is determined and a plaster cast can be made of this. After a period of time, the shape of the splint often requires adjustment because the child has grown or because some degree of fusion has occurred after all. |
