IX International Symposium of Epidermolysis Bullosa

IX International Symposium of Epidermolysis Bullosa

In December, DEBRA Chile together with Clínica Alemana of Santiago organized the IX International Symposium of Epidermolysis Bullosa -Crystal Skin Children- in Santiago, Chile.

The main objective of this Symposium, which is held every two years in Santiago, is to educate patients and healthcare professionals on clinical care and research on EB. For this Symposium the Directors were Dr. Palisson (Dermatologist), Dr. Yubero (Paediatrician/Infectologist) and Dr. Fuentes (Ph.D in Genetics), all from the DEBRA Chile team. DEBRA International contributed to this event by awarding a small project grant to DEBRA Chile.

This time, seven international speakers (Dr. A. Lucky, Dr. R Cornwall, Dr. J Mellerio, Dr. M Jonkman, Dr. J Bauer, Dr. J Tolar, and Dr. A Hovnanian) and eleven national speakers participated in this event, all giving presentations of their work and experiences acquired over the years working with EB. The audience consisted of close to 150 participants from different South American countries, such as Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. Presented topics were highly diverse, ranging from how anemia is being treated at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to the latest clinical trials on 3D skin grafts for RDEB patients currently taking place in Europe. Moreover, a poster session was included allowing participants to present their work.

Finally, the last activity in the program was a Nursing Workshop, given by 4 EB-experienced nurses: 1 from DEBRA Spain, 2 from the Cincinnati EB Center, and 1 from DEBRA Chile. In this Workshop, nurses from different countries could share and discuss their experiences and learn from others on how to treat specific patients and wounds.
