Research conference reports

Progress in research, although sometimes seeming frustratingly slow for those waiting for something that makes a big difference to their lives, has been remarkable over the past few years. This is really very obvious if we look at the progress in our EB research that is reported at the DEBRA International research conferences that we hold every three years.

EB2006 - The prospect of a first real breakthrough treatment was reported at the conference we held in Dublin in 2006. All the excitement was about the gene therapy trial for non-Herlitz JEB, with the breakthrough success reported by Professor Michele De Luca and his team in treating a single patient by grafting patches of the patient's own skin grown and genetically corrected in the laboratory for the EB fault in the patient's laminin gene.

EB2009 - Three years on, not only did we hear that a similar gene therapy grafting approach was being developed by at least two groups, in France and in Stanford, for RDEB, but that a whole gamut of other therapeutic approaches – particularly in the cell therapy area, are rapidly approaching clinical trials.

EB2012 - It's safe to predict that at our upcoming research conference in 2012 we will hear the early-stage results of numerous trials of a wide range of therapies. There will inevitably be setbacks, with technological and other hurdles to be overcome – all medical research moves according to an unpredictable rhythm of 'slow-slow-quick-quick-slow' – but the rapid pace of translation from laboratory to clinical trial is remarkable.
