From Congress to Publication: EB Congress 2026 Abstracts in Einstein (São Paulo) Journal

The International EB Congress 2026, held in São Paulo in January, brought together the global epidermolysis bullosa (EB) community for several days of shared learning, collaboration, and progress across research, care, and advocacy. With the publication of the congress supplement in einstein (São Paulo), this collective effort has now been captured in a lasting, accessible format.

The supplement includes the full collection of accepted abstracts, alongside a welcome address from the organisers, the official congress programme, and a broader recap of the event. Together, these elements offer an opportunity to revisit the key discussions, themes, and advancements that shaped EB 2026.

The publication also reflects the collective effort behind the science. The Scientific Committee expressed sincere appreciation to the invited reviewers whose time, expertise, and scientific rigour were essential in evaluating submissions and ensuring the high quality of abstracts selected for presentation. Recognition is also due to all researchers, clinicians, and contributors who submitted their work, each abstract representing a meaningful step forward for the EB community.

Recap of EB Congress 2026 Abstracts

The abstract supplement reflects the full spectrum of global EB research—from molecular science to lived experience. Together, the abstracts map not only where the field stands today, but where it is heading.

Genetics, Diagnosis & Molecular Understanding

A significant portion of the abstracts focused on improving diagnostic precision and deepening genetic understanding of EB.

Representative abstracts/topics include:

  • Next-generation sequencing approaches in EB diagnosis

  • Novel mutations in COL7A1 and genotype–phenotype correlations

  • Diagnostic challenges in rare EB subtypes in low-resource settings

These studies reinforce the importance of accurate and early diagnosis—not only for patient care, but also for enabling access to emerging therapies and clinical trials.

Gene, Cell & Regenerative Therapies

Therapeutic innovation was one of the most prominent themes across the congress.

Representative abstracts/topics:

  • Topical gene therapy outcomes in dystrophic EB

  • Ex vivo gene-corrected skin grafts: early clinical results

  • Stem cell and fibroblast-based therapies for wound healing

  • CRISPR and gene editing strategies in EB pipelines

These abstracts reflect a field rapidly evolving toward disease-modifying and potentially curative approaches.

Wound Care, Pain & Clinical Management

Alongside innovation, there remains a strong focus on improving daily care.

Representative abstracts/topics:

  • Advanced wound dressings and infection control strategies

  • Pain management protocols in severe EB

  • Nutritional interventions in paediatric EB patients

  • Multidisciplinary care pathways and outcomes

This body of work highlights the ongoing importance of optimising supportive care to improve both survival and quality of life.

Cancer & Long-Term Complications

Several abstracts addressed long-term complications, particularly EB-associated skin cancer.

Representative abstracts/topics:

  • Early detection of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in dystrophic EB

  • Tumour microenvironment in chronic EB wounds

  • Emerging systemic therapies for EB-associated cancers

These studies reflect the urgent need to better understand and manage one of the most serious complications of EB.

Patient-Centred Outcomes & Quality of Life

A growing number of abstracts focused on the lived experience of EB.

Representative abstracts/topics:

  • Quality of life assessment tools in EB

  • Mental health burden in patients and caregivers

  • School inclusion and social participation in children with EB

  • Patient-reported outcome measures in clinical trials

This shift underscores the importance of ensuring research outcomes align with what matters most to patients and families.

Global Health, Access & Inequality

Global disparities in EB care were a strong and recurring theme.

Representative abstracts/topics:

  • Access to EB diagnosis and treatment in low- and middle-income countries

  • Barriers to advanced therapies outside high-income regions

  • Building EB registries in emerging countries

These contributions highlight the need for continued efforts to ensure equitable access to care and innovation worldwide.

Registries, Data & Natural History Studies

Finally, several abstracts emphasised the importance of data and infrastructure.

Representative abstracts/topics:

  • National EB registry development

  • Natural history studies in dystrophic EB

  • Real-world data to support clinical trials

These efforts are essential for strengthening the evidence base and accelerating progress across the field.

Looking Ahead

The abstracts from EB Congress 2026 represent a field advancing on multiple fronts; scientifically, clinically, and globally. Their publication in einstein (São Paulo) Journal ensures that this progress is not only documented, but shared, built upon, and translated into impact.

Congratulations and sincere thanks to DEBRA Brasil for hosting a successful congress, guest editing the einstein (São Paulo) journal and for bringing together the global EB community in such a meaningful and impactful way.
