Taking DEBRA to new heights

During EB Awareness Week 2022, DEBRA International followed the endeavours of Dr Niraj Parajuli, a dermatologist from the National Academy of Medical Sciences in Kathmandu, Nepal and founder of DEBRA Nepal, as he embarked on #TheButteflyChallenge.

Facing the tough, rugged conditions of the Nepalese wilderness, Niraj would attempt two treks to raise awareness of EB taking DEBRA to Thorong La Pass, the highest mountain pass in the world, and to Tilicho Lake, the highest freshwater lake in the world.

It was exciting, adventurous, and at the same time strenuous. Niraj was able to complete the Tilicho Lake trek but unfortunately was unable to cross the Thorang La as he developed mild symptoms of acute mountain sickness so had to do an early and rapid decent. He intends to complete it in the next upcoming season. DEBRA International would like to say a huge congratulations to Niraj on his sterling efforts to raise awareness of EB and DEBRA.

“I would like to thank everybody for your support and encouragement. I hope we will be able to continue this challenge in upcoming years.” – Dr Niraj Parajuli
